If you ever receive a cancellation notice from your car insurance company don’t ignore it. A cancellation is serious business that could have negative consequences well into the future. Instead, you should contact them and try to work out a way to keep your policy intact.

Bear in mind that a cancellation is different from non-renewal. When a car insurance company chooses not to renew your policy they are still agreeing to carry you until the end of your current policy term. A cancellation is different in that the company’s decision means they are terminating your policy right away.

There are a number of reasons why car insurance companies cancel customer policies:

missed or continually late payments

customers withholding information or reporting false information

serious infractions like DWI/DUI or hit and run

specific customer violations of the insurance contract

Consequences of a Cancellation

When your insurance policy is canceled several things happen. First and foremost, the cancellation goes on your driver record for the entire insurance world to see. The cancellation serves as a red flag for future car insurance companies who might be unwilling to take you on as a result.

Second, if you do find a new insurance company willing to offer you a standard policy your rate will be higher. How high depends on the reason for cancellation. For lack of payment or a serious violation you can expect some of the highest rates possible.

Third, if your cancellation was the result of a severe violation you will most likely be forced into a high risk group. As a member of this group you may not be able to get standard car insurance. Your only option might be to get a policy from a company specializing in high risk drivers or your state’s high risk pool. In either case, you’re going to pay through the nose.

Avoiding the Cancellation

If a cancellation notice comes because you failed to make a payment you may have 10 business days to get your money in and still avoid the cancellation. Do it, whatever it takes. Then contact your insurance company to see if there’s a way you can set up an easier payment schedule for the future.

If a cancellation notice is the result of you providing your carrier false or misleading information you may be able to head it off by contacting them and talking things over. As long as you’re making attempts to clear up the information and put your best foot forward, they might be willing to work with you. In the future, just be honest.

Lastly, if the cancellation is due to a DUI/DWI or something similar, there’s probably nothing you can do about it. You’ll have to get a high risk policy and keep your nose clean for the next 5 to 7 years, until those things are taken off your record. At that point you should be able to find cheaper car insurance more line with what you were previously paying.

Are you planning a trip across either the northern or the southern borders of the United States sometime this summer? If so, there are some important things you need to know about car insurance. For starters, make sure you have enough protection in place so that you are covered no matter where you drive.

If you are driving north of the border into Canada, the insurance situation is very easy to deal with. If you’re going south to Mexico however, things are not so easy. Nevertheless, regardless of where you are traveling to you can get cheap car insurance to fulfill the law. Even if you are driving a rental car.

Driving in Canada

American visitors to Canada will be pleased to know that our two countries have a reciprocal agreement when it comes to car insurance. This means tourists from either country do not need a separate car insurance policy to drive across the border. Your current policy will do just fine.

This only applies to tourists and certain foreigners with specific types of visas, by the way. If you are a visitor, you have up to 180 days to continue driving before you have to obtain Canadian car insurance or return home. Since most of us will never be visiting Canada for that long, it’s a non-issue.

However, if you do plan on being in the country longer you might contact your current car insurance company to see if they can help you with Canadian policy. They might be able to simply add on a rider that fills Canadian law without having to create a new policy from scratch.

Also, remember that whatever limits your insurance has in the United States also apply in Canada. For example, if you only carry $50,000 worth of liability, that’s all you’ll be covered for in Canada, regardless of the cost of any accident you might have.

Driving in Mexico

Unlike Canada, the United States does not have a reciprocal agreement with Mexico. That means your U.S. car insurance is no good south of the border. This is true whether you are driving deep into the country for a week or just crossing the border for a couple of hours in Tijuana. And make no mistake; the Mexican government is dead serious about insurance laws.

In Mexico, every traffic accident is automatically considered a criminal matter pending the outcome of an investigation. If the investigation revealed that you do not have valid Mexican car insurance, it is quite likely you are looking at jail time. Driving in Mexico without insurance is not a smart thing to do.

Fortunately, it is easy to get cheap car insurance before driving south of the border. If you are planning your trip well in advance, contact your current insurance company and see if they are licensed to offer policies in Mexico. If not, there are a number of specialist car insurance companies you can find on the Internet.

If you’re taking a spur of the moment trip for which you did not plan, there are Mexican car insurance companies in most border crossing towns. Just be sure of one thing if you go this route: get your documents printed in both Spanish and English. You need to know exactly what your policy covers before you cross the border.

Car insurance is a fact of life no matter where it is you drive your car. There’s no point in getting upset about it. Instead, take the time to know the laws before you go. If you need to buy temporary car insurance, find the best deal you can and get on with it.

So, you’ve got yourself some new wheels, now all you need to do is insure them. Finding auto insurance in this day and age is pretty easy, all it really takes is a website such as CheapAutoInsurance7.com and a few details about you and the vehicle and you will be returned with a selection of quotes from which you can compare, before selecting the best one. It really is that simple.

But what exactly is your car insurance insuring? You know that you are purchasing a premium for a specific car, but what insurance components go into to making up a quote?

There are several coverage types on the market that tend to differ between states. Before committing to any auto insurance premium, it is well worth knowing about what each coverage type offers.

Auto Liability Coverage

This type of auto insurance is designed to pay for damage if you are a deemed legally responsible for injuring someone, or causing damage to a vehicle or property in a car accident.

Auto liability coverage is divided in to two categories:

Bodily injury liability – covers claims of injury and death against you, as well as legal costs if your car injures or kills another person.

Property damage liability – covers claims for property damaged by your car in an accident.

Auto liability is designed to protect the other party in an accident and is therefore a legal requirement in all but three states. Each state will have a minimum amount of auto liability coverage that is required.

Medical Payments

This type of car insurance coverage is available in most states and covers the reasonable cost of medical and funeral bills for you and occupants of your car at the time of an accident. Some states operate on a “no fault” basis, in which medical payments are replaced as part of the basic coverage by personal injury protection (PIP).

Personal Injury Protection

This coverage works in much the same way as medical payments, covering medical expenses for those injured in an accident; however, it may also cover loss of earnings, rehabilitation and replacement of services.

Uninsured Motorist Protection

It is thought that as many as 30 percent of drivers in some states are uninsured. This type of auto insurance coverage pays for injuries to you and your passengers in the event of an accident caused by a driver without liability insurance. In addition to this, it is also possible to take out Underinsured Motorist Protection, which will cover claims against drivers with inadequate insurance.

Collision Coverage

This coverage will help pay for damages to a vehicle that have been caused by a collision with another vehicle, object, or a rollover. Damage to the car will be covered up to book value (the value of your car in the Kelley Blue Book) and will require a deductible, which is the amount you have to pay with your own money before insurance can be claimed. Most leasing companies will require collision coverage.

Comprehensive

Comprehensive insurance offers a great deal of cover to drivers related to non-accident incidents, although premiums are generally higher as a result. This type of auto insurance covers damage to a car from:

Theft

Vandalism

Fire

Wind

Flood

Hail

Hitting an animal

It does not cover collisions or vehicle rollovers, and carries a deductible.

Now that you know exactly what your car insurance is actually covering, you can find yourself premium that is perfectly suited to your needs, and you can use CheapAutoInsurance7.com to do it!

When a person purchases their first or new car, there is excitement in the air. However, one thing that can put a dampener on the experience is looking for cheap auto insurance quotes. To add to the frustration, some people seem to get better deals on their car insurance than others, but why?

It’s all About Risk

The job of an insurance policy is to make sure the driver is covered against accidents and collisions where they might injure themselves or other people. They can also cover costs for the driver if the car is vandalized or stolen for instance.

Because the insurance companies need to pay out the cost of covering these eventualities, they need to know how likely it is that any of these things might happen to the policy holder, or in short, how much of a risk they present. Once this has been worked out, a quote is given. The following are particular groups which insurance companies tend to use as guides when working out rates.

New Drivers/Teenagers

This particular group tends to get stung with their premiums. From the insurance carriers point of view, new driver means inexperience and possibly, slight recklessness due to the excitement of being on the open road on their own. This all means that they are more likely to have a collision. There are a few things which might be able to lower the rates though for people in this predicament:

Complete a driver’s training course – Some insurance companies will actually refer drivers to a course on request. This will instantly lower the premiums as well as giving new driver’s more confidence on the road.

Students may be able to get a discount for being a student, but also if they can provide good school records showing a 3.0 GPA or above. The grades reflect the kind of person who is intuitive and pays attention in school, hence the kind of person who should make a good driver.

Women

Statistically, women have fewer accidents than men and insurance companies mostly offer lower rates to their female clients, unless of course they have made a previous claim or have an unclean driving record.

Men

Men are stuck with higher rates than women, because of the statistics on show. However, there are certain discounts which are available to men. For instance, the older men get, the more the rates come down, especially if they have years of a clean driving record under their belts.

Home Owners

Home owners are placed in a favorable price bracket as they are seen as responsible people. They also have the luxury of combining their home insurance with their auto insurance to bring the price of both policies down.

Married People

Married couples, similar to home owners, are believed by many insurance companies to be less of a risk because of their family commitments. They too can enjoy good rates and possibly multiple policy discount if both partners have a car or if they insure two drivers on the one car.

At first glance it might seem that some people get better deals on car insurance than others but there is always a way to beat the price down with a little time and effort.

Most of us have loaned our cars to friends or relatives at one time or another. For the occasional run to the store or the drive to and from work, we typically don’t think it’s too big a deal. But that’s not necessarily the case. The laws in most US states make car owners liable to some degree for the actions of anyone to whom they loan their vehicle — even if that person has his own vehicle and insurance policy!

For just a moment, consider the possibility of loaning your car to your brother who is visiting for a couple of weeks. Assuming he has his own car insurance policy you figure it will cover him completely if he’s in a crash. Then let’s assume your brother has an accident and you find out he only has a cheap car insurance policy that covers minimum liability amounts in his state.

If your brother is sued by the other parties to the crash the award a court gives them might exceed his liability limits. Guess who the court will go after next? You. As the legal owner of the car you are responsible for the actions of your brother even though he’s an adult with his own insurance policy. Your insurance will have to make up for what his does not cover. If neither of you have enough liability coverage you’ll be paying for it out of your pocket.

Furthermore, your brother’s cheap car insurance isn’t going to pay to repair or replace your vehicle. That will be the responsibility of your insurance company through the collision and comprehensive coverage you purchased. And that’s assuming your insurance company will agree to pay for it. If they do, your rates are sure to go up.

Your Three Options

If you’re concerned about loaning your vehicle to others for extended amounts of time you have three options to protect yourself. Which one is right for you depend on your circumstances.

Option 1 – Require the borrower to increase his own liability limits. If the person borrowing your car will be doing so for a significant length of time you’d be wise to require the driver to increase his own liability limits to at least $100,000 per accident. This may seem excessive, but it’s really not. Even $100,000 is a drop in the bucket when compared to a multi-million dollar award.

Option 2 – Require the borrower to purchase temporary insurance. If the person you’re a loaning your car to doesn’t own a vehicle with his own car insurance policy, you should definitely require him to purchase temporary car insurance while he’s borrowing yours. You can find affordable car insurance in 30, 60, 90, and 180 day increments. Any temporary insurance your friend or relative purchases should have liability limits of no less than $100,000.

Option 3 – Purchase your own umbrella policy. Purchasing umbrella insurance is a good way to cover yourself against a whole host of unforeseen events. It’s called “umbrella” insurance because it covers all of those things not dealt with by your other insurances such as your auto, home, and life policies. Umbrella insurance is always a good idea anyway, if you have high value personal assets, but even more so if you’re loaning your vehicle to friends and relatives.

Whether you take any action to protect yourself when loaning your vehicle or not is a matter of personal preference. Each driver needs to measure his own risk and his comfort level with that risk. Those who are concerned certainly have enough options to cover themselves.

The one thing that motorists agree upon is that they need cheap auto insurance for their cars. Finding the companies that offer special deals or discounts is not hard to do since the internet came into play. Of course, which companies are the best is a subjective matter since we all have our own particular likes and dislikes. But there are some companies around which offer some good deals and these are listed here.

List of Popular Companies

Esurance – If the comments are to be believed on this one, some drivers claim to have saved more than five hundred dollars on a six month policy. Although price should not be the only way to choose insurance for the car, it has to be considered since we all love to make savings in these hard economic times. It is simple to fill in the documentation online so it is very convenient for those people who work and they don’t have to go to the office to pay the bills. The policy is delivered online too so there is little lag time between booking the insurance and printing it out at home.

Liberty Mutual – is another online insurance company that has good and competitive pricing. Some comments on their blogs recommended the company for cars only and not for RVs and it was suggested that the driver keep checking the policy when it was up for renewal to avoid any increases in premiums.

State Farm – This is a very popular company that offers many kinds of insurance as well as reasonably priced auto insurance. Even health is covered by this company so the driver may well attract discounts if he moves all his insurance needs to them. The benefit of this company is that it is online twenty four hours per day so there is always someone available to advice on insurance issues. Some insurance is free providing several policies are held with them so this is a good way to save some dollars. This company has many glowing references online so it is well worth taking a look at what they can offer.

Allstate – This insurance company will offer ‘forgiveness’ for no accidents which literally translates into lower premiums. Staff are trained to assist drivers and don’t pick too much when it comes to making claims. Some companies pay the bare minimum and try to cut down on their payouts. If they only knew how many clients they lose in this way, other companies may follow Allstate’s lead on this.

Progressive – This insurance company has online facilities and it is very simple to see what they have on offer. Even if their client is making a claim, many reports suggest that the process is simple. This is what drivers like since any argument at this stage could lose any insurance company a valuable customer.

Nationwide – This insurance company is known for trying to cut rates to the bare minimum. They are extremely user friendly and will make the effort to help clients new and old.

21st Century – This insurance company has a great reputation and the driver gets free roadside assistance thrown in as well. Not only that, with the competitive rates they offer, and the excellent service, this must be one of the best insurance companies around today.

AAA – This is a highly regarded insurance company and sits firmly among the top companies for auto insurance. People comment on how courteous and professional the agents are and it is said to be one of the companies that others fear for competition. Maybe this one should be tried and tested along with all the others.

It seems everybody is a critic of other peoples driving these days. Most people will often agree that some places around the US are almost sure to reveal terrible drivers.

But where are the hot spots for the worst drivers in America?

What US Zip Code Has The Worst Drivers?

Worst of the Worst

Allstate insurance data indicates that throughout the whole of the US, each driver will be involved in a collision of some kind once a decade, on average. Going forward from this, Allstate studied their 8th annual report of insurance claims from 195 cities across the nation and was able to show which areas presented the highest probability of drivers being involved in an accident. With number one being the city containing drivers who are most likely to be involved in an accident and the following cities having a decreasing chance of such eventuality, the following data was found:

1. – Washington D.C – Was ranked number one in 2011 also with drivers being 112% more likely than the national average to be involved in a collision here.

2. – Baltimore – Ranked number two on the list in 2011. Drivers are 88% more likely to crash here than the national average.

3. – Providence, R.I – Ranked number five on the list in 2011. Drivers here are 81% more likely to crash than the national average.

4. – Hialeah, Fla – Ranked number 11 on the list in 2011. Drivers are 78% more likely to have a crash here than the national average.

5. – Glendale, Calif – Ranked number three on the list in 2011. Drivers are 76% more likely than the national average to have a crash here.

6. – Philadelphia – Ranked number six on the list in 2011. Drivers are 64% more likely to have a crash here than the national average.

7. – Alexandria, Va – Ranked number 10 on the list in 2011. Drivers are 63% more likely to have a crash here than the national average.

8. – Newark, N.J – Ranked number four on the list in 2011. Drivers are 59% more likely to have a crash here than the national average.

9. – Miami – Ranked number 16 on the list in 2011. Drivers are 58% more likely to have a crash here than the national average.

10. – San Francisco – Ranked number nine on the list in 2011. Drivers are 55% more likely to have a crash here than the national average.

On the flip side of this though, the drivers of Sioux Falls, S.D can congratulate themselves for keeping their town average of vehicular accidents down to 27.6% (nearly five times) less than the national average. This is followed, in order, by:

Boise, Idaho

Fort Collins, Colo

Madison, Wisc

Lincoln, Neb

Why?

Most people would be forgiven for thinking that smaller towns and cities would be less likely to have a high probability of crashes in the area. This is due to there being less traffic and slower roads in these places. Whilst this trend is shown to be mostly correct, there are some exceptions to the rule. For instance, Phoenix, Tuscan and Indianapolis all fare better than the national average when it comes to their driver’s ability to avoid collisions. Alternatively, whilst Philadelphia, Miami and San Francisco all make it to the top ten worst cities for vehicular accidents, there are a number of smaller towns which present more danger than the big cities according to Allstate’s research.

On closer inspection, it seems that the layout of the roads themselves in each city may have a part to play in the dismal statistics. One only has to look at number one on the top ten worst cities for car accidents list to see that, not only is Washington ranked worst city for bad drivers (for the 7th time out of 8 years), drivers can expect to have an accident over twice as often as the national average (one accident every 4.7 years). It may seem odd for a city full of preventative measures such as speed cameras and heavy penalties against driving with cell phones etc. However, when a person considers the road layout in Washington, with huge intersections where novice and careless drivers would find it easy to misjudge the situation, it is easy to see why the accident rate is so high.

Following on from this observation, we can see that out of the other cities on the list, five of them are along the East coast, where the roads were not built for modern day traffic, but rather the ambling horse and cart of yester year.

Avoid the City, Avoid the Bad Drivers?

Although the statistics may seem to indicate that if every “decent” driver avoids these places, they will be safer, anybody who knows anything will know this is not the case.

Whilst the terrain in each place can certainly have a factor in the probability of an accident occurring, so does the skill and responsibility of each driver. The best chance for anyone to avoid any kind of collision is to always take particular care when driving and adhere to the laws of the road.

If you had to rank the most important criteria for buying car insurance what would be the items on your list? Would you only be concerned about price? Unfortunately, that seems to be the one deciding factor causing people to sign with one insurance company over another. Yet while price is important, you can’t forget the idea of customer service. You will need good customer service if you ever have to:

deal with billing issues

make changes to your policy

file an accident claim

It’s great to be able to get cheap car insurance for just a few hundred dollars per policy period, but if the customer service doesn’t exist you could end up spending more money in the long run. Customer service should definitely be near the top of your list of criteria.

Measuring Customer Service

It’s easy to look online and find prices for various car insurance companies. When it comes to customer service, it’s a little trickier. The best place to start is with a professional market research company like JD Power and Associates. Market research is all JD Power and Associates does, but they do it extremely well. In fact, they may be the most well respected firm in the business. They rate car insurance companies according to a list of factors, customer satisfaction being among them.

The next thing you can do is simply search for customer reviews of a given insurance company; customer review websites are a dime a dozen across the Internet. You’ll find lots of anecdotal stories, some more detailed than others, chronicling the experiences various customers have with their insurance companies. The only thing to remember about these sites is that the vast majority of comments are going to be negative. Don’t be alarmed by this. Studies have proven that unhappy customers are far more motivated to leave reviews than happy ones.

Third, do an informal survey among your friends and relatives. Find out what car insurance companies they use, whether or not they are happy with the price, and whether or not they’re happy with the customer service. Since they have no professional or personal interest in seeing their insurance company succeed you’re likely to get pretty honest answers from them.

Getting Satisfaction

In the event you have a customer service issue with your car insurance provider you do have recourse. Every state requires insurance companies operating within their borders to be licensed and overseen by the state insurance department. As such, consumers can file complaints with their state agencies accordingly. As long as the insurance company has not broken the law the state can’t require them to perform a specific action, but just knowing they are being watched keeps many insurance companies in line.

In the event that filing a complaint with your state insurance department proves unsuccessful you can retain the services of an attorney. The threat of potential litigation is something car insurance companies try to avoid if they can. In most cases a skilled attorney can settle with your insurance company out of court. If you do decide to pursue this option just be sure to use an attorney who only charges if you win your case. You don’t want to be stuck with legal bills should you end up losing.

Hopefully customer service is not something you’ll ever have to deal with when it comes to your car insurance. But if you ever have accident that requires a claim, poor customer service will rear its ugly head. When you’re searching for affordable car insurance make sure you find a company that treats its customers well.

Most of us who own cars will spend a moderate amount of money purchasing typical liability insurance plus some level of collision and comprehensive coverage. But there are individuals who own more expensive cars and have lots of valuable assets they need protected. For them, full coverage auto insurance is a must. Even though such broad coverage is extremely expensive, it is worth it for wealthier individuals.

Getting a quote on full coverage auto insurance is no different than securing quotes for more traditional policies. It starts with compiling the contact information for several different car insurance companies you might be interested in working with. One of the easiest ways to do this is to use an online quote tool like the one we provide on this website. Armed with that information you’ll be contacting each company and asking for a quote.

Full Coverage Means Different Things

When you begin the quote process, be careful to let insurance company representatives know exactly what you’re after. We recommend this because the definition of “full coverage” can mean different things to different people. You’ll obviously want traditional liability, collision, and comprehensive, but perhaps you need extra coverage or higher limit amounts. This is where it pays to know what you’re looking for before you get started.

As an example, some comprehensive policies only cover a certain amount of damage that might result from fire, theft, or vandalism. Full coverage in this case would be a rider covering all possible damage regardless of what caused it. Another example of full coverage could apply to the liability portion of the policy in the sense that you’re going to increase coverage limits to protect your personal assets in the event of a lawsuit.

Managing the Expense

Even for wealthier individuals, full coverage auto insurance can be prohibitively expensive on cars that are extremely valuable. In order to fully protect themselves more affordably, some people supplement their car insurance by getting an umbrella policy. An umbrella policy is a form of extra insurance which takes care of most of the things not normally covered under other insurance policies. Where car insurance is concerned an umbrella policy can be a handy thing.

To illustrate this point, consider trying to ensure a classic muscle car from the 1950s; a car you have sunk tens of thousands of dollars into just in restoration costs. You’ll want higher liability limits plus collision and comprehensive policies that will cover any and all damage no matter how it occurred. At that point the policy might be right at your limit of affordability, meaning you can’t add extra coverage to protect yourself against a lawsuit. An umbrella policy will provide that protection for less money than adding the additional coverage to your auto policy.

Full coverage auto insurance is a really good idea for a lot of people. If you want it just remember to get quotes in the same careful way you would get standard auto insurance quotes.

It can be quite frustrating to spend the time searching for affordable insurance only to realize that you can’t find an inexpensive auto insurance quote anywhere. If this sounds like an experience you’ve had there are a couple of possible reasons for it. Those reasons might include your driving history, the other drivers living in your household, the type of car you drive, and even your credit report.

When you call a company looking for an inexpensive auto insurance quote they ask you a lot of questions. With so many factors involved there could be a number of things affecting the price you’re quoted, to the extent that all of your quotes seem unreasonably high. Let’s look at a few of these factors individually.

Driving History

When preparing a quote the car insurance company first begins with the principal owner of the vehicle. They will look at that person’s driving history for previous claims, violations, and anything else that might raise a red flag. In addition, if there are any other licensed adults living in the same household the car insurance company will look at their histories as well. The reason for this lies in the assumption that it’s quite likely all the drivers will at some point be behind the wheel of your car.

If you or the other drivers in your household have a history of violations and accidents, that tells the car insurance company you are a greater risk behind the wheel. In order to reduce the chances that they will lose money on you, they will charge higher premiums. The worse your driving history, the higher your rates will be.

The Type of Car You Drive

In terms of liability coverage, some vehicles are inherently less safe than others. For example, a large SUV with a fairly high bumper will tend to cause more damage than it will receive if it’s involved in an accident with a compact sports car. That greater potential for harm also means a greater potential for liability and therefore, higher rates. Since liability coverage is all about protecting other drivers from you, your rates will be in direct proportion to the amount of damage or injury your vehicle could cause.

In terms of collision and comprehensive coverage your rates will be determined in relation to how valuable your vehicle is. The more expensive it is to replace, the more you’ll have to pay. It’s difficult to find an inexpensive auto insurance quote on high-end cars.

Your Credit Report

Finally, getting an inexpensive auto insurance quote requires that you have good credit. Poor credit signals to an insurance company that you may not pay the balance of your premiums over the course of a policy term. This opens them up to some risk should you have an accident without your premium payments being up to date. While a poor credit score won’t send your insurance rates through the roof, they will add to the price of your premium.
